Runners starting the Artarmon Parkrun on a sunny morning

My First Parkrun in Artarmon

Sept ,13th 2025

On your marks…..

Last weekend I laced up my runners and joined the Artarmon Parkrun for the very first time. I’ve been hearing about Parkrun for years—parkrun is a free, community-based 5km run held every Saturday morning in parks all over the world—but this was my first chance to actually take part.

A Welcoming Community

From the moment I arrived, the atmosphere was warm and inviting. Volunteers in bright vests guided us through the start line, and locals of all ages were milling around with a buzz of anticipation. This was actually the Artarmon Parkrun’s 400th run! It was great to see the mix of participants—families with prams, experienced runners, walkers, and even dogs enjoying the morning energy.

The Run Experience

The Artarmon route starts off with two laps of the green and then leads through leafy paths which have just the right balance of gentle slopes and flats. I had planned to take this first time a little slower but I actually ended up running my fastest 5km run to date. Not that Im competitive but I’ve already set a higher bar to try and beat next time! By the time I crossed the finish line, I had a satisfying sense of accomplishment that only comes from exercising outdoors.

Why Parkrun Matters

Parkrun isn’t just about running—it’s about community health, connection, and consistency. Having a weekly event where people can gather, move, and support each other makes a huge difference to both physical and mental wellbeing.

How This Connects With What We Do at The Body Project

As an osteopath, I’m always talking to patients about finding movement they enjoy and can stick with. Parkrun is a perfect example—accessible, supportive, and fun. For those recovering from injury or looking to build up strength, walking or jogging a Parkrun can be a great way to ease back into regular activity.

If you’re thinking about giving it a go, I’d highly recommend the Artarmon Parkrun (or whichever one is closest to you). You might surprise yourself, just as I did, by how enjoyable it is to be part of something so positive.
